Update on reform to Aged Care Act

Sweeping new aged care laws passed by federal parliament: police checks and bond and prudential regulation

New laws passed tonight (December 4) by Federal Parliament will offer increased protection for aged care residents – and provide stricter prudential regulation.“The new laws are a part of a package of reforms to protect the frail and aged in our community,” the Minister for Ageing, Mrs Justine Elliot said.

The package of reforms will also extend police checks to all staff – supervised and unsupervised – working in Australia’s 2,830 aged care homes.

In addition, it would provide the regulation framework to ensure aged care homes report missing residents without explanation and whose absence have been reported to the police to the Department of Health and Ageing. … > full media release
